It supersedes the previous editions published in 2022, 2017, 2013, 2009, 2005, 2001, 1996, 1991, 1987, and 1981.This Standard covers the requirements for steel valves intended to be used for transporting fluids as specified in CSA Z662.The following are the major changes to this edition:a) revised requirements for maximum cold working-pressure ratings;b) revised requirements for materials for non-metallic parts;c) new requirements for pressure test instrument calibration;d) new requirements for record retention; ande) revised requirements for additional valve markings.This Standard should not be used as a stand-alone reference document. This Standard provides modification or additional content as deemed applicable by the user:a) API 6D;b) API 599;c) API 600;d) API 602;e) API 608; andf) API 609.Note: Items a) to f) all default to ASME B16.34 for pressure/temperature ratings, materials, and other basic elements of valve design and construction.1.2 Size, nominal pressure class, and category1.2.1 SizeThis Standard covers valves in the sizes specified in the scope of the valve reference standards (see Clause 5.3and Table A.1).1.2.2 Nominal pressure classThis Standard covers valves in the scope of the valve reference standards (see Clause 5.2and Table B.1).1.2.3 CategoryThis Standard covers valves in the following categories:a) Category I — valves without requirements for proven notch-toughness properties (for design temperatures at or above −29 °C); andb) Category II — valves with requirements for proven notch-toughness properties (for design temperatures at or above −45 °C).Note: This Standard is not applicable for temperatures below −45 °C.1.3 TerminologyIn this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
