Standard Test Method for Erodibility Determination of Cohesive Soils in the Field and in the Laboratory Using the Submerged Jet Erosion Test

Standard Details

1.1 These test methods cover the estimation of erodibility of a soil by the submerged Jet Erosion Test (JET) method, addressing devices of two different sizes. Test Method A uses a device with a 0.25-in. [6.35-mm]-diameter jet nozzle and a 12-in. [305-mm] diameter submergence tank to confine or hold the sample. Method B uses a 0.125-in. [3.18-mm] nozzle and 4-in. [102-mm] tank. Both devices can be applied in situ to a prepared field site, or in the laboratory to intact soil samples or remolded specimens. Both devices use a pressurized submerged water jet to erode soil, and the records of applied water pressure and measured erosion depth versus time are used to estimate soil erodibility parameters. Methods for estimating erodibility parameters (Section 11) from scour depth information of the test are presented in the appendixes.

1.2 The test is limited to cohesive soils with limited maximum particle size, approximately coarse sand or limited amounts of fine gravel. It is not applicable to clean, cohesionless sands.

1.3 The test may require classification of the soil tested according to Practice D2487 and determination of water content according to Test Method D2216. This test, especially Method B, is often performed on compaction test specimens derived from Test Methods D698 and D1557.

1.4 Units—The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. Reporting of test results in units other than inch-pound shall not be regarded as nonconformance with this standard.

1.5 All observed and calculated values shall conform to the guidelines for significant digits and rounding established in Practice D6026, unless superseded by this test method.

1.5.1 The procedures used to specify how data are collected/recorded and calculated in the standard are regarded as the industry standard. In addition, they are representative of the significant digits that generally should be retained. The procedures used do not consider material variation, purpose for obtaining the data, special purpose studies, or any considerations for the user’s objectives; it is common practice to increase or reduce significant digits of reported data to be commensurate with these considerations. It is beyond the scope of these test methods to consider significant digits used in analysis methods for engineering data.
