Standard Terminology for Goods Movement Process (GMP)

Standard Details

1.1 The terms defined in this document illustrate generally sequential phases of the pre-goods movement process, the goods movement process, and the post-goods movement process, and these phases may further subdivide into recognizable statuses and aligning events to establish uniform predictable communication related to the goods movement under contract of carriage. This standard seeks to precisely define the statuses such that even if the reader is unfamiliar with these terms, the reader will be able to relate to the exact moment of described status change from the pre-goods movement process, through the goods movement process, and through the post-goods movement process. A status generally occurs in a specific phase, but may also occur in another phase (see 3.2 for more details).

1.2 This document is organized to logically sequence terminology to align with the sequence in which events and statuses will generally occur in practice (see Fig. X2.1).

1.2.1 The pre-goods movement process includes a transportation forecasting phase related to goods where the seller predicts and projects the demand for its products from customers and plans the required supply from suppliers to meet the demand. The focus of this work is on vendor selection for the goods. However, this process also provides the projections for the aggregate transportation needs related to the goods. The seller engages with one or multiple logistic service providers to plan how to meet those transportation needs in the transportation forecasting phase. The pre-goods movement process deals with aggregate information over extended periods of time, whereas the goods movement process repeats over and over, shipment by shipment in shorter periods.

1.2.1.1 In the transportation forecasting phase, the statuses are PREDICTED and PROJECTED.

1.2.2 The goods movement process spans the purchasing of goods by a buyer from a seller and the related movement of goods with contracted carriers or logistics service providers to move goods from seller custody to buyer custody. It includes planning, execution, and reconciliation phases.

1.2.2.1 In the planning phase, the statuses are POSTED and PRE-BOOKED, and the milestone is BOOKED.

1.2.2.2 In the execution phase, the milestones are EN ROUTE and DELIVERED.

1.2.2.3 In the reconciliation phase, the milestones are INVOICED and ARCHIVED.

1.2.3 The post-goods movement process includes an analysis phase. The process begins when the transportation of the goods has been completed and all known transportation costs have been accounted for and settled with the paying party. The key transaction data is first extracted from the various transaction data and then structured. That structured data is then used for analysis and reporting. The data may be anonymized for specific kinds of analysis and reporting.

1.2.3.1 In the analysis phase, the statuses are STRUCTURED and ANONYMIZED.

1.3 The reason for this structure is that this ensures that a user of this terminology will see the related terms when searching for a specific term. In many instances, the user may then see the related terms and realize that one of those related terms is a better fit for the purposes that the user had in mind when starting the search in this terminology.

1.4 The structuring of the section grouping the related terms and definitions evolves over time, and therefore, this section does not provide an overview of those sections. Such an overview may be added in future versions of this terminology.

1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
