Preface This is the ninth edition of CSA B365, Installation code for solid-fuel-burning appliances and equipment. It supersedes the previous editions published in 2017, 2010, 2001, 1991, 1987, 1984, 1982, and 1980. Significant changes in this edition include updated reference publications, revised requirements for shielding, flue pipes, clearance, and alcove shielding, and adding appendix on decommissioning. This Code is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Code. This Code was prepared by the Technical Committee on Installation Code for Solid-Fuel-Burning Equipment, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Fuels and Appliances, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Code has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 Inclusions This Code specifies requirements for the installation, alteration, and maintenance of solid-fuel-burning appliances and equipment installed indoors or outdoors. 1.2 Types of appliances In this Code, solid-fuel-burning appliances include a) furnaces; b) boilers; c) stoves; d) ranges; e) space heaters; f) factory-built fireplaces; and g) water heaters. 1.3 Solid fuel types In this Code, the term "solid fuel" includes a) cordwood; b) wood chips; c) sawdust; d) peat logs; e) wood and other biomass pellets; f) kernel corn; and g) coal. 1.4 Exclusions This Code does not apply to a) incinerators; b) site-built fireplaces; c) process equipment; or d) portable appliances. 1.5 Terminology In this Code, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with this Code; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of this Code. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.6 Units of measurements The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Code. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
