Preface This is the harmonized ANCE, CSA Group, and UL standard for In-Ground Outlet Boxes . It is the first edition of NMX-J-869-ANCE, the first edition of CSA C22.2 No. 337, and the first edition of UL 2996. This harmonized standard was prepared by the Association of Standardization and Certification (ANCE), CSA Group, and ULSE. The efforts and support of the Technical Harmonization Subcommittee, THC 23B, In-Ground Boxes, on the Harmonization of Electrotechnical Standards of the Nations of the Americas (CANENA), are gratefully acknowledged. This standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the standard. The present Mexican standard was developed by the CT 23, Artefactos Eléctricos from the Comité de Normalización de la Asociación de Normalización y Certificación, A.C., CONANCE, with the collaboration of the in-ground outlet boxes manufacturers and users. This standard was reviewed by the CSA Integrated Committee on Wiring Devices under the jurisdiction of the CSA Technical Committee on Wiring Products and the CSA Strategic Steering Committee on requirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the CSA Technical Committee. This standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This standard applies to in-ground outlet boxes with integral wiring enclosures, for mounting at finished grade and allows access to wiring device(s) connected to branch circuit(s). An in-ground box is intended to be installed in accordance with: a) NFPA 70, National Electrical Code; b) CSA C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, Safety Standard for Electrical Installations; c) Mexico’s Electrical Installations, NOM-001-SEDE. 1.2 In-ground outlet boxes may also accommodate telecommunication-circuit accessories for powerlimited circuits. 1.3 This standard provides requirements for in-ground outlet boxes and associated assemblies for the mounting of devices and accessories. In-ground Outlet boxes are suitable for use in locations that provide in-ground drainage. These in-ground outlet boxes may be suitable for pedestrian traffic ("Light Duty" or "Tier 2")* or pedestrian traffic and occasional nondeliberate vehicular traffic ("Tier 5")*. 1.4 This standard does not apply to: a) Boxes for use in hazardous (classified) locations as defined in the NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, CSA C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, Safety Standard for Electrical Installations and NOM-001-SEDE Mexico’s Electrical Installations; b) Junction boxes for Swimming Pools covered by UL 1241 and CSA C22.2 No. 89; c) Commercial Appliance Outlet Centers covered by UL 891 / CSA C22.2 No. 244 / NMX-J-118/2-ANCE; d) Products covered by UL 486D / CSA C22.2 No. 198.2 / NMX-J-519-ANCE, Sealed Wired Connectors; e) Boxes used for infrastructure lighting and traffic lighting, and handhole and manhole boxes and enclosures intended solely for electrical installation and maintenance access; f) Concrete boxes; g) In-ground outlet boxes greater than Tier 5 in accordance with SCTE 77 Specification for Underground Enclosure Integrity; h) Grade-level in-ground enclosures covered by CSA C22.2 No. 344.
