Standard Details

1.1 This practice covers procedures for the collection and preparation of representative samples of coke. These samples may be used for physical and chemical analyses.

1.2 Coke, especially run of oven furnace coke and foundry coke due to its large top size, can be a difficult material to sample. It is imperative that every sample be collected and handled carefully and in strict accordance with the standard procedures described herein and within the referenced standards.

1.3 The following ISO standards2 shall be the governing documents specifying requirements for the sampling and preparation of metallurgical coke:

ISO 13909-5 Coal and coke — Mechanical sampling — Part 5: Coke — Sampling from moving streams

ISO 13909-6 Coal and coke — Mechanical sampling — Part 6: Coke — Preparation of test samples

ISO 13909-8 Coal and coke — Mechanical sampling — Part 8: Coke — Methods of testing for bias

ISO 18283 Coal and coke — Manual sampling

1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard.

1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
