Preface This is the first edition of CSA Z259.20, Horizontal rigid rail anchorage subsystem s. It is part of a series of Standards on components of fall protection systems. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of the Canadian Association of Administrators of Labour Legislation — Occupational Safety and Health (CAALL-OSH), including provincial and territorial governments, as well as the Government of Canada. This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Horizontal Rigid Rail Anchorage Subsystems, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Fall Protection and the Strategic Steering Committee on Occupational Health and Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 General This Standard provides requirements related to the performance, design, testing, labelling, and provision of instructions for manufactured horizontal rigid rail anchorage subsystems (HRRAS), including trolleys. This Standard applies to an HRRAS as a component of a complete travel restraint system or fall arrest system. 1.2 Inclusions This Standard covers all HRRAS intended to be used by one or two workers simultaneously. 1.3 Exclusions This Standard does not apply to a) HRRAS that are custom-designed for limited or site-specific applications as designed in accordance with CSA Z259.16; b) HRRAS that are not intended to be levelled; c) HRRAS that are not intended to be linear; d) HRRAS used for suspension, including but not limited to boatswain chairs, suspended work platforms, people; e) HRRAS where the end stop of the rail might be significantly loaded in the event of a fall (i.e., the fall hazard cannot be past the ends of the rail); f) the fastening method of the HRRAS to the anchorage; and g) the anchorage. 1.4 Fall protection equipment This Standard does not address any fall protection equipment attached to the HRRAS. 1.5 Terminology In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the worker is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.6 Units of measurement The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
