Benchmark energy factor (BEF) for industrial air movement systems

Standard Details

Preface This is the first edition of CSA C506, Benchmark energy factor (BEF) for industrial air movement systems. CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of BC Hydro, Efficiency Manitoba, Electricity Canada, Fortis BC Electric, Hydro Québec, and Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA). This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Benchmark Energy Factor for Industrial Fan system, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Energy Efficiency of Industrial Equipment and Systems and the Strategic Steering Committee on Performance, Energy Efficiency, and Renewables, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 Inclusions This Standard is intended for industrial air handling systems with the following characteristics: a) systems with energy consumption greater than 500 000 kWh per year; b) systems with air flow greater than 9.4 m3/s (20 000 cfm); c) air movement systems with a maximum energy output limit of 25 kJ/kg of air, which is equivalent to a maximum pressure ratio of 1.3 per stage; d) flow velocity of ≤100 m/s (≤20 000 fpm), which characterises the flow as incompressible; e) any single parallel or series configured for air supply, air collection, exhaust, induced draft, or forced draft applications; and f) for material handling applications, using dilute-phase conveying, with air-to-solid loading ratio ≥2.0 by weight. 1.2 Exclusions This Standard is not intended to be used for air movement systems with the following characteristics: a) systems without partition, i.e., ceiling fans, crossflow fans, and air curtain units; b) systems with partition and free inlet and outlet, i.e., sidewall fans; c) multi-room building ventilation systems; d) systems that have a pressure ratio greater than 1.3; e) for material handling application using dense phase conveying with air-to-solid loading ratio <2.0 by weight; and f) applications with air temperature greater than 250 ᵒC. 1.3 Terminology In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application. 1.4 Measurements The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
