Preface  This is the second edition of CSA C22.2 No. 164, Electric sauna heating equipment , issued by CSA Group under the Canadian Electrical Code, Part II. It supersedes the previous edition published in 1991. The major differences between this edition and the previous edition include a) updates to the markings and installation instructions; b) updates to the sharp test apparatus; c) updates to the current-carrying parts; d) updates to the reference publications; and e) reformatting to the latest editorial guidelines. For general information on the Standards of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part II, see the Preface of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 0, General requirements — Canadian Electrical Code, Part II. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Sauna and Sauna Heaters, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Consumer and Commercial Products and the Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety. Scope 1.1 This Standard applies to permanently-connected electric sauna (dry bath) heating equipment rated 300 V or less, designed to be installed and used in non-hazardous locations in accordance with the Rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. 1.2 This Standard applies to the following electric sauna heating equipment: a) a sauna heater unit intended for fixed installation in a special room that is built or assembled in the field to conform to the manufacturer's size specifications; and b) the combination of a sauna heater or heater unit and a prefabricated, factory-built room or cabinet in which the assembled combination can be specified for field installation, or that can be supplied with a power supply cord and intended to be fastened in place or located in a dedicated space. The room may be arranged so that it can be taken apart for shipment. 1.3  Clauses 4 to 7 apply to the heater unit described in Clause 1.2 a). Clause 8 applies to the combination of a sauna heater or heater unit and the room or cabinet as described in Clause 1.2 b). 1.4 The requirements in Clauses 4 to 7 do not apply to steam bath equipment. 1.5 Throughout these requirements, the term "heater" is used broadly to refer to any sauna heater or heater unit, including its associated control assembly. 1.6 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only. 1.7 In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
